The grandfather of IVF died last week after bringing bundles of joy to millions of mums and dads who feared they would never have children. Prof Sir Robert Edwards began working in the field of fertilisation in the 1950s and he and Dr Patrick Steptoe carried out their ground-breaking research in the face of opposition from church leaders, governments and sections of the media, and scepticism from scientific colleagues.
